Winters, Texas

Winters is located at 31°57′32″N 99°57′32″W / 31.95889°N 99.95889°W / 31.95889; -99.95889 (31.958786, -99.958810).[4] It is situated at the junction of U.S. Highway 83 and Farm Roads 53 and 1770 in north-central Runnels County, about 41 miles (66 km) south of Abilene and 52 miles (84 km) northeast of San Angelo.[5]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.9 square miles (7.6 km2), of which 2.4 square miles (6.1 km2) are land and 0.58 square miles (1.5 km2), or 19.97%, are covered by water.[3]

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen climate classification system, Winters has a humid subtropical climate, Cfa on climate maps.[6]

Yorktown, Texas

Yorktown is located in southwestern DeWitt County at 28°59′00″N 97°30′09″W / 28.983196°N 97.502415°W / 28.983196; -97.502415Coordinates: 28°59′00″N 97°30′09″W / 28.983196°N 97.502415°W / 28.983196; -97.502415 (28.983196, -97.502415).[4] State Highways 72 and 119 intersect on the western side of town. Highway 72 leads northeast 16 miles (26 km) to Cuero and southwest 25 miles (40 km) to Kenedy, while Highway 119 leads northwest 35 miles (56 km) to Stockdale and south 24 miles (39 km) to Goliad.

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Yorktown has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[5]

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,271 people, 864 households, and 584 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,318.1 people per square mile (509.8/km²). There were 1,048 housing units at an average density of 608.3 per square mile (235.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 79.83% White, 2.99% African American, 0.40% Native American, 15.32% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.60% of the population.

Woden, Texas

The area of Nacogdoches County was settled by immigrants from the Old South in the 1830s and was known as Jacobs, then later called King's Store. In 1886 a post office was established and the community was named Woden after the Old English deity Woden. In the 1890s, Woden residents moved the community to a location closer to a nearby railroad which had bypassed them, and named their new town Oval. In 1895 this town, at the current location, was then renamed Woden. The chief economic activity until the 1930s was logging, which later declined. Agriculture is now responsible for notable business in the region.[1] It was known as a sundown town.

Although Woden is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 75978;[2] the ZCTA for ZIP Code 75978 had a population of 137 at the 2000 census.[3] Woden is home to a post office, a K-12 school, and a Baptist, Presbyterian, and United Pentecostal church, as well as a volunteer fire department.

Zapata, Texas

Zapata is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of Zapata County, Texas, United States.[3] The population was 5,089 at the 2010 census. As an unincorporated community, Zapata has no municipal government but like all 254 Texas counties has four elected county commissioners chosen by single-member districts and a countywide elected administrative judge.

Zapata was named for José Antonio de Zapata (died 1839), the revolutionary commander who served in the cavalry of the Republic of the Rio Grande, of which the town was a part.[4] The town was relocated to higher ground in 1953 prior to the completion of Falcon Dam, which left the original town center beneath the waters of Falcon Lake.

At the 2010 census,[1] there were 5,089 people, 4,328 households[citation needed] and 1,265 families[citation needed] residing in the CDP. The population density was 629.9 per square mile (243.2/km2).[citation needed] There were 2,239 housing units at an average density of 290.4 per square mile (112.1/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 92.38% White, 0.02% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 6.82% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 94.99% of the population.

Wolfe City, Texas

Wolfe City is a city in Hunt County, Texas, United States, located at the intersection of state highways 34 and 11. It is 17 miles (27 km) north of Greenville in north-central Hunt County, and was settled in the 1860s or 1870s when J. Pinckney Wolfe built a mill near the banks of Oyster Creek. The population was 1,412 at the 2010 census,[3] down from 1,566 at the 2000 census.[4]

Wolfe City is located near the northern border of Hunt County at 33°22′05″N 96°04′14″W / 33.367996°N 96.070430°W / 33.367996; -96.070430 (33.367996, -96.070430).[5] State Highway 34 runs through the center of town as Santa Fe Street, leading northeast 21 miles (34 km) to Honey Grove and south 17 miles (27 km) to Greenville, the Hunt county seat. State Highway 11 crosses Highway 34 in the northern part of Wolfe City, and runs northwest 23 miles (37 km) to Whitewright and southeast 13 miles (21 km) to Commerce.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Wolfe City has a total area of 1.5 square miles (4.0 km2), of which 1.4 square miles (3.7 km2) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2), or 7.56%, are water.[3]

Zavalla, Texas

Zavalla is a city in Angelina County, Texas, United States. The population was 713 at the 2010 census.[3] The town is named for Lorenzo de Zavala, a Mexican rancher, politician, and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence who served as the first Vice-President of the Republic of Texas. Its city limits stretch several miles south of town into a heavily wooded area.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 647 people, 268 households, and 176 families residing in the city. The population density was 306.6 people per square mile (118.4/km²). There were 340 housing units at an average density of 161.1 per square mile (62.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.68% White, 0.46% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.62% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.01% of the population.

There were 268 households out of which 34.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 30.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.99.

Wolfforth, Texas

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,554 people, 900 households, and 723 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,700.6 people per square mile (657.4/km²). There were 972 housing units at an average density of 647.2/sq mi (250.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 85.47% White, 1.29% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 12.06% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.71% of the population.

There were 900 households out of which 43.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% were married couples living together, 15.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.6% were non-families. 16.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.12.

In the city, the population was spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.1 males.

Zephyr, Texas

Zephyr is located at 31°40′34″N 98°47′41″W / 31.67611°N 98.79472°W / 31.67611; -98.79472 (31.6759884, -98.7947697). It is situated along U.S. Highway 84 in southeastern Brown County, about 12 miles east of Brownwood and 54 miles southwest of Stephenville.[2]

The community was initially located on the banks of Blanket Creek in 1850. The name Zephyr, meaning soft, gentle wind, was first used by land surveyors who were trapped in the area during a blue norther.[1] In 1863, the Lazarus Vann family arrived in the vicinity. They were joined by other families over the next few years. A school was founded in 1876. Zephyr's first store opened in 1878 and a post office was established the following year. In 1885, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway completed a line from Brownwood to Lampasas that missed Zephyr by roughly a mile. Store owner J.M. Wilson moved his store and the post office one mile west of the community's initial location to its present site.[2] The community would later become a station on the railroad. On May 30, 1909, an F4 tornado struck Zephyr, killing 34 people and injuring 70. Most of the deaths occurred in residential areas on the southern and eastern sides of the community. To date, the Zephyr tornado remains one of the deadliest tornadoes in the state's history.[3] The community rebuilt and experienced a long period of growth. By 1940, the population stood around 750. A new high school was constructed that same year. Zephyr's economy was dependent on cotton, but a boll weevil infestation and deteriorating market conditions caused the community's last gin to close in the early 1940s.[1] The population had fallen below 300 during the 1960s and remained at that level into the 1970s. During the final decades of the 20th century, Zephyr was home to around 198 people. That figure remained constant through 2000.[1]

Public education in the community of Zephyr is provided by the Zephyr Independent School District. The district has one campus that includes both Zephyr Elementary School (grades K-6) and Zephyr High School (grades 9-12).

Woodlake, Texas

Woodlake is an unincorporated community in Trinity County, Texas, United States.[1] Located on U.S. Route 287, it lies 4 miles southeast of Groveton. In 1990, the estimated population was 301 residents.

The town was originally settled around the mid-1860s, but did not see any real growth until the 1880s when the Thompson and Tucker Lumber Company was established there.[2] The post office opened in 1889 under the name Willard, and would remain open until 1910. By the time World War I occurred, the timber in the region was exhausted, and the sawmill was dismantled. The name Woodlake was chosen for what remained of the town in 1925, after the small reservoir that had supplied the mill. The Great Depression and the downfall of the Waco, Beaumont, Trinity and Sabine Railway impacted the local economy. In 1934 the United States Government took over an unsuccessful agricultural project started by Helen Kerr Thompson (a relative of the former mill owner), and new housing would be built. The project failed and many of the residents moved away. A youth camp was established there as the Baptist Church of East Texas purchased the community buildings. Although Woodlake is unincorporated, it has a post office with an address of 5923 US Hwy 287 Woodlake, Tx 75865-9600, questioning its status as a city or a town.

Woodlawn, Texas

Woodlawn is a rural unincorporated community in north-central Harrison County, Texas, United States. Woodlawn is located 8 miles north of the county seat, Marshall, on U.S. Route 59 (Future Interstate 369).
