Madison County, Kentucky

Madison County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 82,916.[1] Its county seat is Richmond.[2] The county is named for Virginia statesman James Madison, who later became the fourth President of the United States.[3]

It is considered a moist county, meaning that although the county prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages (and is thus a dry county), it contains a city where retail alcohol sales are allowed. Nevertheless, two of Richmond's 19 precincts are dry.[4] Alcohol can also be sold by the drink in Berea,[5] Richmond, and at Arlington and The Bull golf clubs.

Madison County is home to Eastern Kentucky University, Berea College, Boone Tavern, and Bybee Pottery,(closed February 2011) one of the oldest pottery operations in the United States.[6] This is also where famous pioneer Daniel Boone lived and built Fort Boonesborough, now a state historic site.

(Fort Campbell Boulevard) at the eastern edge of Fort Campbell just north of the Tennessee state line. KY 400 heads east along State Line Road, which runs immediately north of the state line. The highway turns north away from the state line and veers east again to its terminus at KY 115 (Pembroke–Oak Grove Road).[1][2] The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet established KY 400 through a March 30, 1987, official order. The route was added as a rural secondary highway; however, the highway was reclassified as a supplemental road at an unknown date, returned to the rural secondary system through an October 26, 2004, official order, and returned to the supplemental road system after a December 9, 2010, official order.[4]

The route originates at a junction with KY 44 near Anderson City and travels northward to Birdie where it meets the southern terminus of KY 512 and turns more toward the northwest. At Crooked Creek Road the route turns toward the north and enters Shelby County roughly 1.5 miles further to the north. 1.5 miles into Shelby County, the route meets the southern terminus of KY 1472 and turns toward the west, passing through Harrisonville. Roughly 1.5 miles west of KY 636 the route turns toward the northwest then northeast into Waddy. North of Waddy KY 395 crosses Interstate 64 at Exit 43 and continues north across US 60. It then travels through Bagdad and ends at KY 43 roughly 5.5 miles north of Bagdad in Elmburg. The entire route is located in primarily rural sections of Anderson and Shelby counties.

White Plains, Kentucky

White Plains was established in 1853, and was originally known as "Little Prairie." With the arrival of the railroad in 1870, Little Prairie became the shipping point for a community then known as "White Plains" (modern Fruit Hill) further to the south in Christian County, and thus became known as "White Plains Station," or "New White Plains." When the postmaster of the Christian County community renamed it "Fruit Hill," the "New" was dropped from the name of the Hopkins County city.[3][4]

White Plains is located in southeastern Hopkins County at 37°11′4″N 87°23′5″W / 37.18444°N 87.38472°W / 37.18444; -87.38472 (37.184489, -87.384739).[5]U.S. Route 62 passes through the northern part of the community, leading east 13 miles (21 km) to Greenville and west 4 miles (6 km) to Nortonville.

According to the United States Census Bureau, White Plains has a total area of 3.18 square miles (8.24 km2), of which 3.11 square miles (8.05 km2) are land and 0.07 square miles (0.19 km2), or 2.34%, are water.[2]

As of the census of 2000,[2] there were 624 people, 250 households, and 192 families residing in the ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA for Wittensville's ZIP code. The racial makeup of the ZCTA was 98.6% White, 0.2% African American, and 0.5% Asian.

There were 250 households out of which 39.6% had children under the age of 18, 51.2% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% were non-families. 18.8% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.79.

The median income for a household in the ZCTA was $14,635, and the median income for a family was $18,750. Males had a median income of $25,948 and $18,274 for females. The per capita income was $7,517. 34.7% of the families in the community were below the poverty line.

Kentucky Route 1012 is a 3.036-mile-long (4.886 km) rural secondary highway in Ashland in northern Boyd County. The highway begins at US 60 (13th Street) in the southwest corner of the city of Ashland. KY 1012 heads east along Boy Scout Road, which parallels Keys Creek for much of its course. The highway curves north away from Keys Creek and turns east onto South Belmont Street before reaching its eastern terminus in south central Ashland at KY 168, which heads north along South Belmont Street and south on Valley View Drive.[1][2][3]
