Wathena, Kansas

Wathena is located at 39°45′44″N 94°56′53″W / 39.76222°N 94.94806°W / 39.76222; -94.94806 (39.762161, -94.948117).[12] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.31 square miles (5.98 km2), of which 2.28 square miles (5.91 km2) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) is water.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,364 people, 550 households, and 365 families residing in the city. The population density was 598.2 inhabitants per square mile (231.0/km2). There were 587 housing units at an average density of 257.5 per square mile (99.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.6% White, 1.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.

There were 550 households of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 33.6% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.92.

Wichita, Kansas

Wichita (/ˈwɪtʃɪtɔː/ WITCH-i-taw)[8] is the largest city in the U.S. state of Kansas[9][5] and the county seat of Sedgwick County. As of 2017, the estimated population of the city was 390,591.[6] Wichita is the principal city of the Wichita metropolitan area which had an estimated population of 644,610 in 2015.[10][11]

Located in south-central Kansas on the Arkansas River,[3] Wichita began as a trading post on the Chisholm Trail in the 1860s and was incorporated as a city in 1870. It became a destination for cattle drives traveling north from Texas to Kansas railroads, earning it the nickname "Cowtown."[12][13]

In the 1920s and '30s, businessmen and aeronautical engineers established aircraft manufacturing companies in Wichita, including Beechcraft, Cessna, and Stearman Aircraft. The city became a U.S. aircraft production hub known as "The Air Capital of the World."[14]Textron Aviation, Learjet, Airbus, and Spirit AeroSystems continue to operate design and manufacturing facilities in Wichita, and the city remains a major center of the American aircraft industry. Wichita is also home to McConnell Air Force Base,[15][16] and Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, the largest airport in Kansas.

Waverly, Kansas

Williamsburg, Kansas

Webber, Kansas

In 1887, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built a branch line from Neva (3 miles west of Strong City) through Webber to Superior, Nebraska. In 1996, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway merged with Burlington Northern Railroad and renamed to the current BNSF Railway. Most locals still refer to this railroad as the "Santa Fe".

Webber is located at 39°56′9″N 98°2′5″W / 39.93583°N 98.03472°W / 39.93583; -98.03472 (39.935809, -98.034726).[9] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.11 square miles (0.28 km2), all of it land.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 25 people, 13 households, and 8 families residing in the city. The population density was 227.3 inhabitants per square mile (87.8/km2). There were 27 housing units at an average density of 245.5 per square mile (94.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 100.0% White.

Wilmore, Kansas

There were 27 households of which 11.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% were married couples living together, 3.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 29.6% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.96 and the average family size was 2.21.

Weir, Kansas

In 1899, more than 200 African-American miners traveled here from Pana, Illinois, after being attacked by white union members in what was called the Pana riot during a coal mining strike. They were eager for work and unwilling to return to Alabama, from where they had been recruited.[14]

Wilsey, Kansas

An agricultural-based community, Wilsey was named after pioneer John D. Wilsey. In the early 1880s, the Missouri Pacific Railroad was built through the county, at which time Wilsey established the city. The community once supported a business district and schools.

WaKeeney, Kansas

James Keeney, a land speculator in Chicago, purchased land at the site of modern-day WaKeeney from the Kansas Pacific Railway in 1877. He and business partner Albert Warren formed Warren, Keeney, & Co., surveyed and plotted the site in 1878, and established a colony there in 1879.[8] They named the colony WaKeeney, a portmanteau of their surnames, and billed it as "The Queen City of the High Plains", advertising and holding celebrations to attract settlers.[9] The colony grew rapidly, but crop failures drove settlers to leave in 1880 as quickly as they had come. By 1882, all that was left were "five poorly patronized retail stores".[10] Years later, Volga Germans began settling the area.[8]

WaKeeney is located at 39°01′28″N 99°52′55″W / 39.024467°N 99.881972°W / 39.024467; -99.881972 (39.024467, -99.881972)[11] at an elevation of 2,447 feet (746 m).[5] Located in northwestern Kansas at the intersection of Interstate 70 and U.S. Route 283, it is 162 miles (261 km) northwest of Wichita, 281 miles (452 km) east-southeast of Denver, and 284 miles (457 km) west of Kansas City.[12]

WaKeeney lies in the High Plains region of the Great Plains approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Big Creek, a tributary of the Smoky Hill River.[13][14] A small tributary of Big Creek flows south from near the center of the city.[14]

Welda, Kansas

Harris is located at 38°10′9″N 95°17′41″W / 38.16917°N 95.29472°W / 38.16917; -95.29472.[7] According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.93 square miles (2.4 km2), of which 0.0077 square miles (0.02 km2), or 0.79%, is water.[2]
